Frequently Asked Questions About Chiropractic Care at $25 Chiropractic

Simple, Honest, Quality Chiropractic Care in Phoenix

If you’re looking for a chiropractor in Phoenix, you probably have some basic questions: How much does it cost? Do I need insurance? Will I have to get X-rays? What happens at my first visit? Will I be pressured into a long-term treatment plan? And, perhaps most importantly, do I really need all of the things that many chiropractic offices tell me I need? At $25 Chiropractic, the philosophy is pretty simple: provide experienced, professional chiropractic care without making it more complicated or expensive than it needs to be. I’m Dr. Troy Counselman. I’ve been practicing chiropractic since 1995, and after more than 30 years in the profession, I’ve come to believe that chiropractic care works best when we get back to the basics. This page answers the questions I hear most often from patients and the questions people commonly ask when they’re looking for a chiropractor in Phoenix.

About $25 Chiropractic

What is $25 Chiropractic?

$25 Chiropractic is a locally owned, one-doctor chiropractic practice in Phoenix, Arizona. The practice is built around a simple idea: provide professional chiropractic care while keeping the office, pricing and treatment process straightforward. There isn’t a large staff, an elaborate facility or a complicated menu of treatments. You come in, get the chiropractic care you need, and get on with your day.

Why is it called "$25 Chiropractic"?

The name comes from our four-visit package. Four visits cost $100, which works out to $25 per visit. A single chiropractic treatment is currently $35.

Why does a single visit cost $35 if you’re called $25 Chiropractic?

The $25 price applies when you purchase the four-visit package. Four visits are $100, or $25 each. If you don’t want to purchase a package, you can simply pay $35 for an individual visit. When the clinic was opened in 2013 the cost was $25 for each adjustment, but after 10 years without a price change the 1 visit price was raised just $10 to $35 and we decided to keep the 4 visits for $100 because people were used to the name.

Is $25 Chiropractic a chain?

No. $25 Chiropractic is not a national chain or group of chiropractic clinics. It is a local, independently operated, one-doctor practice.

Who will I see when I come to $25 Chiropractic?

You’ll see me, Dr. Troy Counselman. There isn’t a rotation of doctors or a large staff of providers. Keeping the practice small is intentional.

Why is the office so simple?

Because chiropractic treatment doesn’t require a huge building, a large staff or an elaborate collection of equipment. After more than 30 years of practicing in different types of chiropractic offices, I’ve come to believe that much of what has been added to chiropractic practices over the years isn’t necessarily what patients actually need. The goal at $25 Chiropractic is to concentrate on the part that matters most: providing good chiropractic care.

Does a simple office mean I receive lower-quality chiropractic care?

No. The simplicity of the office is a business decision, not a reflection of the doctor’s experience or training. Keeping overhead low allows the practice to offer chiropractic care at a much lower price than many traditional chiropractic offices.

What makes $25 Chiropractic different from other Phoenix chiropractors?

The biggest difference is simplicity. There is one doctor, straightforward pricing, cash-pay care, no required long-term treatment plans and no elaborate new-patient process designed around selling you a program. The goal is to provide experienced chiropractic care without unnecessary complications.

Chiropractic Pricing

How much does a chiropractic visit cost at $25 Chiropractic?

A single chiropractic treatment is currently $35. There is also a four-visit package for $100, which works out to $25 per visit.

Do the four visits expire?

No. The four visits do not expire.

Can I share my four-visit package with someone else?

Yes. The four visits can be shared with whoever you wish. For example, you could purchase the package and use some visits yourself and allow a family member to use the others.

Are there hidden fees?

The goal is to keep the pricing straightforward. There is never a hidden fee or an “upsell” of any kind.

Why can you charge less than many other chiropractors?

The short answer is overhead. A large chiropractic office with multiple employees, expensive equipment, extensive administrative systems and a large facility has substantially more overhead than a one-doctor practice. At $25 Chiropractic, we keep the business model deliberately simple.

Does a low chiropractic price mean the treatment is cheap or inferior?

Never. The price of a chiropractic treatment doesn’t determine the skill or experience of the chiropractor providing it. A large part of what patients pay for at many healthcare businesses is the cost of running the business itself. I chose a different model.

Is $25 Chiropractic one of the cheapest chiropractors in Phoenix?

Our pricing is intentionally very affordable compared with many traditional chiropractic offices. But the goal isn’t simply to be "cheap." The goal is to provide experienced chiropractic care at a price that makes sense.

Insurance & Payment

Does $25 Chiropractic accept insurance?

No. The practice is a cash-pay chiropractic office. However, most patients that have insurance that covers chiropractic will often find they’re co-pay to be much more per visit than our $35/$25 model.

Why don’t you accept insurance?

The practice is designed to keep chiropractic care simple and affordable. Insurance billing adds administrative requirements and complexity, and patients often still have deductibles, copays or other out-of-pocket expenses. Instead, I chose to offer straightforward cash pricing.

Can I use an HSA to pay for chiropractic care?

Yes. HSA cards are accepted.

Can I use an FSA to pay for chiropractic care?

Yes. FSA cards are accepted.

What forms of payment do you accept?

Cash, credit/debit cards, HSA/FSA cards, Venmo, Zelle and Cash App are accepted.

Is cash-pay chiropractic care right for me?

For many people, it can be. Cash-pay care can be particularly attractive to people who have high deductibles, expensive copays or no chiropractic insurance at all. It also makes the cost of your visit easy to understand before you receive treatment.

Treatment Plans

Do I have to sign up for a long-term chiropractic treatment plan?

No. You are not required to purchase an expensive long-term treatment plan. In fact, the 4 visit discount plan is the largest plan we offer.

Do I have to keep coming to the chiropractor forever?

No. You are free to decide whether and when you want additional chiropractic care.

Will I be pressured to buy a package?

No. The four-visit package is simply a way to receive a lower per-visit price. You can pay for individual visits if that’s what you prefer.

Will someone try to sell me supplements or other products?

The focus of the practice is chiropractic care. The purpose of your visit isn’t to sell you a collection of products or services.

Do I have to commit to a certain number of visits?

No. Your care isn’t based on requiring you to sign up for a predetermined long-term program.

Why don’t you use long-term treatment plans?

After decades in practice, I’ve become increasingly convinced that chiropractic treatment doesn’t need to be made more complicated than necessary. If you need additional care, we’ll discuss it. But I don’t believe patients should be locked into expensive treatment programs simply because that’s how a particular office structures its business.

Your First Visit

What happens during my first chiropractic visit?

Your first visit is primarily about determining what’s going on and whether chiropractic care is appropriate for you. Your initial treatment will almost always be provided on that first visit as well. The only reason a treatment wouldn’t be provided is if it is determined that further diagnostic test or a referral to a different type of provider is required instead. Luckily, this doesn’t happen very often. The process is intentionally straightforward rather than being a lengthy new-patient sales presentation.

Do I need X-rays before seeing a chiropractor?

No. Routine X-rays are not automatically required simply because you’re seeing a chiropractor. Whether imaging is appropriate depends on your history, symptoms and examination.

What should I expect when I arrive?

You’ve already scheduled your appointment online. Come into the Urban Wellness facility and proceed to the table at the end of the waiting room where you will either sign in as an existing patient, or fill out our 1-page patient information and history form before you will be brough back into my office. As a side note, when the office is busy, patients may be treated in the order in which they sign in rather than strictly according to their scheduled appointment time.

How long does a chiropractic appointment take?

The practice is designed around efficient chiropractic treatment rather than lengthy office visits. The exact amount of time can vary depending on your individual circumstances and how busy the office is, but anywhere from 5 – 15 min visits are the norm.

Can I come in if I’ve never been to a chiropractor?

Absolutely. You don’t need to have any previous chiropractic experience.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Normal, comfortable clothing is fine for a typical chiropractic visit. You don’t need special clothing.

Chiropractic Adjustments

What is a chiropractic adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is a controlled manual procedure used to apply a specific force to a joint, commonly a joint of the spine. The purpose is generally to improve movement and function of the affected area.

What type of chiropractic technique does Dr. Troy use?

I’ve been trained in multiple chiropractic techniques, but I prefer traditional spinal manipulative technique (SMT).

What does a chiropractic adjustment feel like?

People experience adjustments differently. Some patients feel a quick movement or pressure followed by a feeling of increased mobility. Others notice very little during the actual adjustment.

Does a chiropractic adjustment hurt?

A properly performed adjustment shouldn’t be expected to be painful, although some people can experience temporary soreness or tenderness afterward. If something hurts during treatment, you should tell the chiropractor.

What is the popping or cracking sound during an adjustment?

Sometimes a chiropractic adjustment produces a popping or cracking sound. The sound is generally associated with a rapid change in pressure within a joint capsules and isn’t the sound of bones grinding against each other.

Does an adjustment have to make a popping sound to work?

No. An adjustment doesn’t have to produce an audible popping sound.

Do you use an adjusting instrument?

The primary approach at $25 Chiropractic is hands-on spinal manipulation. I sometimes will employ an adjusting device but typically this is used for infants, elderly, TMJ issues or just from the desire of the patient. Specific techniques may vary depending on the patient and circumstances.

Is chiropractic adjustment the same thing as cracking your own back?

No. A chiropractic adjustment is a controlled procedure performed by a trained chiropractor. Although people sometimes intentionally crack their own joints, that isn’t the same thing as a professional chiropractic adjustment.

Back Pain

Can a chiropractor help with lower back pain?

Chiropractic care is commonly used for certain types of mechanical or musculoskeletal lower-back pain. Whether chiropractic treatment is appropriate depends on the cause of your pain and your individual situation.

Can chiropractic care help chronic lower back pain?

It may. Chronic back pain can have many different causes, and chiropractic care isn’t appropriate for every type of back problem. An evaluation can help determine whether your symptoms appear appropriate for conservative chiropractic care.

Can a chiropractor help with a stiff lower back?

Some people with restricted spinal movement and associated stiffness may benefit from chiropractic care.

Can a chiropractor help with back pain from sitting?

Prolonged sitting can contribute to musculoskeletal discomfort and stiffness in some people. If your back pain appears to be mechanical in nature, chiropractic care may be one conservative treatment option.

Can chiropractic care help with sciatica?

Some people with sciatic-type symptoms seek chiropractic care. However, "sciatica" describes a symptom pattern rather than one single condition. There can be different causes of pain traveling from the low back into the buttock or leg. An appropriate evaluation is important before deciding whether chiropractic care is suitable.

Can a chiropractor treat a herniated disc?

Chiropractic treatment may be appropriate for some people who have disc-related back or neck symptoms, but a disc problem can vary considerably from one person to another. A diagnosis on an MRI does not automatically tell us what treatment is appropriate.

Can chiropractic care help with muscle tightness?

Some muscle tightness can be associated with restricted joint movement or musculoskeletal problems. Chiropractic treatment may be useful for some patients, depending on the cause.

Neck Pain

Can a chiropractor help with neck pain?

Chiropractic care may be appropriate for certain types of mechanical neck pain and restricted neck movement.

Can a chiropractor help with a stiff neck?

Yes, some forms of mechanical neck stiffness are commonly treated with conservative chiropractic care. However, unusual, severe or concerning symptoms should be medically evaluated rather than automatically assumed to be a routine neck problem.

Can chiropractic care help headaches?

Some headaches are associated with problems involving the neck and surrounding musculoskeletal structures. Chiropractic care may be appropriate for certain headache patterns, but not every type of headache should be treated by a chiropractor.

Can chiropractic care help tension headaches?

Some people with headaches associated with neck and upper-back musculoskeletal problems may benefit from conservative care. The cause and characteristics of the headache matter.

Other Common Reasons People Seek Chiropractic Care

Can I see a chiropractor for shoulder pain?

It depends on what’s causing the shoulder pain. Some shoulder complaints are related to the shoulder itself, while others can involve the neck, upper back or surrounding joints and muscles. An evaluation can help determine whether chiropractic care is appropriate.

Can chiropractic care help hip pain?

Some hip-area pain is musculoskeletal and may respond to conservative care, while other hip problems require different treatment. The source of the pain matters.

Can a chiropractor help with posture-related pain?

Poor or sustained posture can contribute to musculoskeletal discomfort in some people. Chiropractic care may be one component of addressing that type of problem.

Can chiropractic care help with joint stiffness?

Chiropractic treatment can be used to address certain restrictions in joint movement. Whether it’s appropriate depends on the joint involved and the reason for the stiffness.

Can I see a chiropractor if I exercise or lift weights?

Yes. Many active people seek chiropractic care for musculoskeletal discomfort, stiffness or movement restrictions. However, significant injuries should be appropriately evaluated rather than assuming an adjustment is all that’s needed.

Can athletes benefit from chiropractic care?

Some athletes use chiropractic care as part of their approach to musculoskeletal health and mobility. The appropriate treatment depends on the individual athlete and the problem being addressed.

Chiropractic Safety

Is chiropractic care safe?

For appropriate patients and conditions, chiropractic treatment is generally considered a conservative form of care. Like any healthcare procedure, chiropractic treatment has potential risks and isn’t appropriate for everyone.

Are chiropractic adjustments dangerous?

Serious complications are uncommon, but no healthcare procedure is completely risk-free. The important question is whether a particular patient and condition are appropriate for chiropractic treatment.

When should I NOT see a chiropractor?

Some symptoms warrant medical evaluation rather than routine chiropractic treatment. Examples can include significant trauma, unexplained severe pain, progressive neurological symptoms, significant weakness, loss of bowel or bladder control, fever associated with severe pain, or other unusual or concerning symptoms.

Can chiropractic care replace a medical doctor?

No. Chiropractic care and medical care have different roles. A chiropractor should recognize when a patient’s condition requires medical evaluation, diagnostic testing or referral to another healthcare professional.

Can I see a chiropractor while also seeing my medical doctor?

In many circumstances, yes. Chiropractic care and medical care can sometimes be complementary, depending on the patient’s condition. If you’re being treated for a significant medical problem, it’s appropriate to keep your medical provider informed.

Should I see a chiropractor or a medical doctor for back pain?

It depends on the nature of the back pain. Many uncomplicated musculoskeletal back problems can be managed conservatively, but certain symptoms require medical evaluation. If you’re unsure, it’s better to ask than to assume.

Choosing a Chiropractor in Phoenix

How do I choose a good chiropractor in Phoenix?

Consider the doctor’s experience, treatment philosophy, credentials, pricing, communication style and whether the practice’s approach matches what you’re actually looking for. You should also feel comfortable asking questions about what treatment you need and why.

Should I choose a chiropractor based on price?

Price is one factor, but it shouldn’t be the only factor. Experience, treatment approach, communication and whether the chiropractor’s philosophy matches your needs are also important.

Is an inexpensive chiropractor necessarily a bad chiropractor?

Not at all. The cost of chiropractic care can reflect the cost of operating the business as much as the experience of the chiropractor. A small practice with low overhead can charge substantially less than a large office.

What should I ask a chiropractor before becoming a patient?

Good questions include:

  • How much does treatment cost?
  • Do I need insurance?
  • Are X-rays required?
  • What happens during the first visit?
  • Do I have to commit to a treatment plan?
  • What technique do you use?
  • How much experience do you have?
  • What happens if you don’t think chiropractic care is appropriate for me?

Those are reasonable questions, and you shouldn’t be uncomfortable asking them.

Is $25 Chiropractic a good choice if I just want an adjustment?

That is exactly the type of straightforward chiropractic visit the practice is designed to provide. You aren’t required to purchase a long-term treatment plan.

Is $25 Chiropractic a good choice if I don’t have insurance?

Yes. The practice is cash-pay, so you don’t need chiropractic insurance to receive treatment.

Is $25 Chiropractic a good choice if I don’t want a long-term treatment plan?

Yes. There is no requirement to commit to an expensive long-term treatment program.

Is $25 Chiropractic a good choice if I don’t like complicated medical offices?

That’s one of the reasons the practice exists. The office is intentionally small and simple, with the focus on the chiropractic treatment rather than everything surrounding it.

About Dr. Troy Counselman

Who is Dr. Troy Counselman?

I’m Dr. Troy Counselman, a chiropractor who graduated from Parker College of Chiropractic in 1995. His father, uncle and cousin are or were all chiropractor as well so it runs in the blood. I’ve been practicing for more than 30 years and have owned and operated more than a dozen chiropractic clinics during my career. I was literally adjusted the day I was born and have been around it and influenced by it my whole life. I truly believe I was born to be a chiropractor

Does Dr. Troy have any advanced training?

Yes. I have advanced training in neurology and am board eligible as a diplomate in chiropractic neurology.

Why does Dr. Troy prefer traditional spinal manipulation?

After many years of practicing different techniques and working in many different chiropractic environments, I’ve come to prefer getting back to the fundamentals of chiropractic care. I often say that I am an old school, manual, joint moving, traditional chiropractor – a chiropractor’s chiropractor. That doesn’t mean every patient is identical or that one technique is appropriate for everyone. It means I don’t believe chiropractic treatment needs to be made unnecessarily complicated.

Why did Dr. Troy create $25 Chiropractic?

After decades in practice, I became convinced that chiropractic offices had become unnecessarily complicated. Large offices, large staffs, expensive equipment, complicated treatment systems and long-term plans can all increase the cost of care. I’ve done all that in the past and I reached a point in my career where I wanted to create a practice where the emphasis was on the part that matters most: the doctor and the chiropractic treatment.

Why does Google Maps sometimes make it confusing to find the office?

The clinic shares the 2024 address with the larger facility, and the surrounding businesses can make the location confusing. If your navigation takes you to The Presidio Cocina Mexicana, you’re very close, just keep going past the restaurant and Urban Wellness (our building) in on the right.

Do I need an appointment?

Yes. Online appointments are required.

Can I just walk in?

The practice uses online scheduling, so patients should schedule an appointment before coming in.

Can I call the office?

Yes, but the main phone line is voicemail-only because I’m generally treating patients during office hours. You can leave a message and I will text or call you back when I can. Text and email are also available for questions.

No. Scheduling is done through the online appointment system. Text is available for questions and communication, but appointments should be scheduled online.

The online scheduling calendar is the best way to verify current availability.

Why should I check the online scheduler instead of relying on the posted hours?

The posted hours are typical hours rather than a guarantee that every time period will be available. The online scheduler reflects the appointment availability for the day you’re trying to visit.

Questions Patients Sometimes Feel Uncomfortable Asking

What if I’m nervous about getting adjusted?

That’s completely understandable. If you’ve never been to a chiropractor before, you may not know what to expect. Tell me that you’re nervous. We can talk about what I’m going to do before we do it.

What if I don’t want my neck adjusted?

Tell your chiropractor what you’re comfortable with. Good healthcare involves communication between the patient and provider.

What if I only want one visit?

That’s fine. You don’t have to purchase a package or commit to ongoing care.

What if I don’t know whether chiropractic care is right for me?

That’s a perfectly reasonable question. You don’t need to arrive knowing the answer. The purpose of an evaluation is to determine whether your problem appears appropriate for chiropractic care.

What if I have already seen another chiropractor?

That’s not a problem. Tell me what you’ve experienced previously, including what you liked or didn’t like.

What if another chiropractor told me I need 20 or 30 visits?

A recommendation from another chiropractor doesn’t automatically mean you need the same treatment plan here. I prefer to evaluate the individual patient rather than start with a predetermined number of visits.

What if I can’t afford expensive chiropractic treatment?

That’s one of the reasons I created this practice. The goal is to make experienced chiropractic care affordable without requiring expensive long-term programs.

What if I just want a straightforward chiropractic adjustment?

Then you may be exactly the type of patient this practice was designed for. No complicated sales presentation. No required long-term treatment plan. No insurance billing. Just straightforward chiropractic care at a straightforward price.

Still Have a Question?

If your question isn’t answered here, you’re welcome to contact me. I’m happy to answer questions directly. If I’m treating a patient when you call, please leave a voicemail and I’ll return your call. You can also contact the office by text or email. Or, if you’re ready to come in, you can schedule your appointment online. Simple, honest, quality chiropractic care. That’s the idea.
